Phnom Penh, February 19, 2024: Prime Minister Hun Manet addressed speculation about a potential capital relocation during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Chak Angre Krom Prek Pra Bridge today. He affirmed that Cambodia has no intention of moving the capital from Phnom Penh.
"Phnom Penh is well-situated and developed," the Prime Minister stated. "The Royal Government encourages responsible growth within the city, facilitating ease of living for its residents." He emphasized that there's no policy restricting people's right to access transportation, ensuring smooth urban development.
Acknowledging past capital shifts ("We have changed a lot from Odong to Angkor"), Prime Minister Hun Manet compared Cambodia's position to two neighboring ASEAN nations. "While Indonesia and Myanmar have relocated their capitals, our focus lies in optimizing Phnom Penh's potential."
The ceremony underscored the government's commitment to sustainable urban development. The Chak Angre Krom Prek Pra bridge project, scheduled for completion in 2025, aims to improve regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth while maintaining residents' quality of life.
